The Complete Guide to Maternity Photography in Cairns

The Complete Guide to Maternity Photography in Cairns

Pregnancy has a way of feeling both incredibly long and impossibly short.

For months, your world revolves around tiny kicks, growing anticipation and imagining the little person you’re about to meet. Then, before you know it, they’re in your arms, and this chapter becomes a memory.

That’s why I believe maternity photography is about so much more than documenting a beautiful bump.

It’s about preserving the season before everything changes.

The quiet excitement.

The gentle anticipation.

The way your toddler carefully kissed your tummy.

The way your partner looked at you while imagining the future.

These aren’t just photographs for today.

They’re part of your family’s story.

If you’re considering maternity photos but aren’t quite sure where to start, this guide will answer some of the most common questions I hear from expecting parents.

When Is the Best Time for Maternity Photos?

Most maternity sessions take place between 28 and 34 weeks, when your bump is beautifully defined and you’re often still feeling comfortable enough to enjoy the experience.

Every pregnancy is different, though, so the best time is always the time that feels right for you.

Outdoor or Indoor Maternity Photos?

One of the wonderful things about living in Cairns is having access to beautiful beaches, rainforest and open spaces.

But outdoor sessions aren’t the only option.

Indoor sessions offer a quieter, more intimate experience where the focus naturally falls on your connection as a family.

There isn’t a right or wrong choice.

Only the one that feels most like you.

What Should I Wear?

One of the biggest worries parents have is choosing the right outfit.

My advice is always to keep things simple.

Soft, neutral colours, natural textures and clothing that makes you feel comfortable will always create timeless photographs.

The goal isn’t to follow trends.

It’s to look back years from now and still love your images.

Including Toddlers

One of my favourite parts of maternity sessions is watching older siblings begin their journey into becoming big brothers and sisters.

Children don’t need to sit still or smile perfectly.

They simply need the freedom to be themselves.

Before becoming a photographer, I studied child development, and that understanding continues to shape every session I photograph.

Rather than expecting children to fit into the session, I build the experience around the way they naturally explore, play and connect with the people they love.

That’s where the magic happens.

Why Include Your Partner?

Pregnancy isn’t only part of Mum’s story.

It’s the beginning of a new chapter for your whole family.

Including your partner allows your photographs to tell a richer story—one your child will one day look back on with curiosity and love.

How to Prepare

The best preparation isn’t perfect outfits or perfectly behaved children.

It’s simply arriving ready to spend time together.

My sessions are intentionally relaxed, child-led and never rushed.

Because the photographs you’ll treasure most usually happen in the moments you never planned.

Are Maternity Photos Worth It?

Only you can decide whether maternity photography is right for your family.

But one thing I hear far more often than “I’m glad we didn’t” is…

“I wish we’d done them.”

Because pregnancy is one of the shortest chapters of your family’s story, even though it doesn’t always feel like it while you’re living it.

My Approach

Every family is different.

Every child is different.

That’s why I don’t believe in asking children—or parents—to perform for the camera.

I believe the most meaningful photographs happen when people feel comfortable enough to simply be themselves.

My sessions are relaxed, connection-focused and built around the way families naturally interact.

Whether we’re walking along one of Cairns’ beautiful beaches, enjoying a quiet indoor session or, one day, welcoming you into my future studio, my goal will always be the same:

To create timeless photographs that feel like your family.

Not perfectly posed.

Not perfectly behaved.

Simply, beautifully you.
