If you’re wondering whether maternity photos are worth it, you’re not alone.
It’s a question many expectant mums ask themselves.
You might be thinking:
“I’m not feeling my best.”
“I’ll probably prefer newborn photos.”
“I’m not usually comfortable in front of the camera.”
Or simply…
“Is this something I’ll actually look back on?”
The answer is different for every family, but I’d love to share why I believe this season deserves to be remembered.
Pregnancy Is One of the Shortest Chapters
When you’re living it, pregnancy can sometimes feel endless.
Then one day, it’s over.
The tiny kicks disappear.
Your hands no longer instinctively rest on your growing bump.
The anticipation of wondering who your baby will be becomes the reality of holding them in your arms.
It’s a chapter that changes your family forever, yet it passes incredibly quickly.

It’s About More Than Your Bump
Maternity photography isn’t simply about documenting what you looked like while you were pregnant.
It’s about remembering how this season felt.
The excitement.
The anticipation.
The quiet moments before your world changed.
If this isn’t your first baby, it’s also about capturing the relationship your older children already have with the little person they haven’t even met yet.
Those tiny hands resting on your tummy.
The cuddles.
The questions.
The excitement of becoming a big brother or sister.
Those moments are every bit as important as the bump itself.

You Don’t Need to Feel “Photogenic”
One of the biggest reasons mums hesitate to book a maternity session is because they don’t feel like themselves.
Pregnancy changes your body in extraordinary ways, and it’s completely normal to have mixed emotions about that.
My job isn’t to ask you to pose perfectly or become someone you’re not.
It’s to create a space where you feel comfortable enough to simply be present with the people you love.
Before becoming a photographer, I studied child development, and that understanding continues to shape every session I photograph. I believe the best family photographs aren’t created by asking anyone—especially children—to perform. They’re created when everyone feels safe enough to simply be themselves.
That includes you, too.

These Photographs Aren’t Just for You
One day, your child will ask what life was like before they were born.
They’ll want to know what your family looked like.
How excited everyone was to meet them.
How carefully their older sibling hugged your tummy.
How their dad looked at you while imagining the future.
These photographs become part of your family’s story.
Not because everything was perfect.
But because it was real.

Looking Back
As a parent myself, I’ve learned that childhood doesn’t ask our permission before it changes.
One day your children fit perfectly beneath your heart.
The next, they’re in your arms.
Then suddenly they’re running ahead of you, holding a school bag that’s far too big.
Photographs don’t stop time.
But they do help us remember what it felt like.

So… Are Maternity Photos Worth It?
Only you can answer that.
But if you ask parents whether they regret having photographs that celebrate this chapter of their family’s story, the answer is very rarely yes.
The question I hear more often is:
“I wish we’d done them.”
Because one day, these won’t simply be photographs of your pregnancy.
They’ll become a reminder of the season before everything changed.
A season your child will never remember…
But one you’ll never want to forget.
