One of the most common questions I receive is, “When should I book my maternity photos?”
The short answer? Earlier than you probably think.
Most families book their maternity session during the second trimester, with their photographs taking place between 28 and 34 weeks of pregnancy.
At this stage, your bump is usually beautifully defined, but you’re often still feeling comfortable enough to enjoy your session.
Of course, every pregnancy is different, and that’s why I always encourage families to choose a time that feels right for them.
Why 28–34 Weeks Works So Well
Around this stage of pregnancy, many mums find they’re in a lovely balance.
Your bump has become a beautiful part of your silhouette, but you’re often still comfortable walking, cuddling your family and moving naturally throughout your session.
For many women, it’s also before those final few weeks when swelling, fatigue or simply feeling ready to meet baby can make photos feel less appealing.
If you’re expecting twins or have a high-risk pregnancy, it’s often worth planning your session a little earlier, just in case baby decides to arrive ahead of schedule.

When Should I Book My Session?
Although your photos won’t usually take place until your third trimester, I recommend getting in touch soon after your 20-week scan.
Booking ahead means we can plan your session around your due date, discuss the type of photographs you’d love and choose a time of day and location that suits your family.
Planning ahead also gives you plenty of time to think about what you’d like to wear and whether you’d like to include your partner or older children.
If you’re hoping to combine your maternity and newborn photography, this is also the perfect time to reserve both sessions together.

What If I’ve Left It Late?
Please don’t panic.
I regularly hear from mums who suddenly realise they’re 34 or 35 weeks pregnant and haven’t organised maternity photos yet.
If my availability allows, I’ll always do my best to fit you in.
Even if you’re approaching your due date, it’s always worth reaching out. Some maternity photographs are almost always better than wishing you’d had them. I’ve even photographed Mums the day before they gave birth!

Morning or Evening?
People often assume maternity sessions have to happen at sunset.
While golden hour is beautiful, it isn’t the only option.
Some families prefer the cooler temperatures and peaceful atmosphere of a sunrise session, especially during the warmer months in Cairns.
Others choose an indoor session, where the focus is entirely on your growing family and the weather becomes one less thing to think about.
There isn’t a “best” choice, only the one that feels right for you.

Why These Photos Matter
Pregnancy can feel incredibly long while you’re living it.
Then, somehow, it’s over in the blink of an eye.
Those tiny kicks become a newborn curled up on your chest.
Your family changes forever.
Maternity photographs aren’t just about documenting your bump. They’re about remembering the anticipation, the excitement and the quiet moments before everything changes.
Whether it’s your first baby or your fourth, this season deserves to be remembered too.
