One of the biggest questions I hear before a maternity session is:
“What should I wear?”
The good news is that you don’t need to buy an entirely new wardrobe or wear something that doesn’t feel like you.
The most beautiful maternity photographs are the ones where you feel comfortable, confident and able to relax. Choosing clothing that reflects your own style will always create more meaningful images than following the latest trends.
Here are my favourite tips to help you choose outfits you’ll love looking back on for years to come.
Choose Soft, Neutral Colours
Soft neutrals and earthy tones photograph beautifully and keep the focus exactly where it belongs, on you and your growing family.
Creams, whites, beige, oatmeal, soft browns, sage greens and muted blues all work wonderfully in almost any setting.
These colours also complement each other effortlessly if your partner and children are joining the session.
By keeping your clothing simple, your photographs will feel timeless rather than tied to a particular trend or season.

Wear Something You Feel Beautiful In
Pregnancy is an incredible journey, but it’s also completely normal to have days where you don’t quite feel yourself.
The outfit you choose should make you feel comfortable and confident, not like you’re wearing a costume.
Some mums love flowing dresses that highlight their bump, while others prefer a more fitted knit dress or even a simple oversized shirt paired with jeans.
There isn’t one “correct” choice.
If you feel good, it will shine through in your photographs.

Keep Patterns and Logos to a Minimum
Large logos, bold graphics and busy patterns can distract from the connection and emotion in your photographs.
Simple textures like linen, cotton, knitwear or soft ribbed fabrics add beautiful interest without overwhelming the image.
These natural materials also complement my relaxed, timeless style of photography.

Think About the Whole Family
If your partner or children are joining your maternity session, you don’t need everyone to match perfectly.
Instead, think about choosing colours that complement each other.
A palette of soft neutrals creates a cohesive look while still allowing everyone’s personality to shine through.
Comfort is especially important for little ones. Children who feel comfortable in their clothes are much more likely to relax and enjoy the session.

Shoes Are Optional
For beach sessions, most families go barefoot.
For indoor sessions, bare feet also create a relaxed, natural feel.
If we’re photographing somewhere that requires shoes, simple neutral footwear usually works best.

Don’t Forget the Little Details
Simple jewellery, natural hair and makeup, and freshly moisturised skin can all help you feel your best without looking overdone.
The goal isn’t perfection.
It’s looking like yourself on one very special chapter of your family’s story.

I Can Help You Decide
If you’re unsure what to wear, I’m always happy to help.
Many families send me photos of a few outfit options before their session, and together we can choose what will photograph best.
I also have a growing client wardrobe with carefully selected pieces that photograph beautifully and suit my natural, timeless style. You’re welcome to use these as part of your session if you’d like to make choosing an outfit even easier.

The Most Important Thing
Long after your baby has arrived, you probably won’t remember exactly what you wore.
You’ll remember how excited you felt.
How your partner wrapped their arms around you.
How your children cuddled into your growing bump.
The best outfit is simply one that allows you to be present in those moments.
Because that’s what these photographs are really about.
