Planning your maternity session is exciting, but it’s completely normal to wonder how to prepare.
The truth is, there isn’t a long checklist.
My sessions are designed to feel relaxed, unhurried and centred around your family—not perfection.
If there’s one thing I’d love you to remember before your session, it’s this:
You don’t need to prepare your family to perform. You simply need to come ready to spend time together.
Here are a few simple ways to help everyone feel relaxed and comfortable.
Choose Clothes That Feel Like You
The most beautiful photographs happen when you feel comfortable in what you’re wearing.
Choose clothing that allows you to move easily, cuddle your children and simply enjoy the experience.
Soft neutral colours and natural fabrics photograph beautifully and create timeless images you’ll love for years to come.

Talk Positively About the Session
If your children are joining us, try talking about the session as a fun family outing rather than something they have to “be good” for.
Young children naturally experience the world through play, movement and curiosity.
When they arrive feeling relaxed instead of under pressure, they’re far more likely to enjoy themselves.
I never expect children to sit perfectly still or smile on command.
Instead, I gently follow their lead, creating space for genuine moments of connection.

Bring the Essentials
A few simple items can make the session even more enjoyable for everyone:
- Water
- Easy snacks for little ones
- A favourite comfort item if your child has one
- Wipes (because toddlers!)
- A spare outfit for younger children, just in case
Hopefully we won’t need most of these, but having them nearby can help everyone relax.

Try Not to Worry About Naps
Parents often apologise before we’ve even started.
“She missed her nap.”
“He’s a bit shy today.”
“I don’t think they’re going to cooperate.”
Please don’t worry.
Every child has different rhythms, personalities and energy levels.
Rather than expecting children to fit into the session, I build the session around the way they naturally experience the world.
Some children want to cuddle.
Some want to explore.
Some need a little extra time to warm up.
All of that is completely okay.

Trust the Process
One of the biggest gifts you can give yourself is permission to let go of expectations.
You don’t need everyone looking at the camera.
You don’t need perfect smiles.
You don’t need your children to behave differently than they normally would.
Some of the photographs families treasure most are the ones they never saw coming.
A little hand reaching for yours.
A spontaneous cuddle.
The way your partner looks at you when you’re laughing.
Those quiet, in-between moments often become the photographs that mean the most.

Remember Why You’re Here
This session isn’t about creating a perfect version of your family.
It’s about celebrating a season that won’t last forever.
Very soon, your baby will be in your arms.
Your toddler won’t be the youngest anymore.
Life will change in beautiful ways.
My hope is that when you look back at these photographs years from now, you won’t remember whether your child smiled at the camera.
You’ll remember what it felt like to hold them while you were waiting to meet the newest member of your family.
And that’s a memory worth preserving.
