So, you’re engaged! Congratulations!
You’ve probably started thinking about venues, guest lists, dresses and all the lovely little details that come with planning a wedding. But somewhere amongst all those decisions, you might be wondering, when should I actually book my wedding photographer?
Is 12 months in advance too early? Is three months too late? And what if you’ve decided to get married in just a few weeks?
The good news is that there’s no single rule that works for every wedding. Whether you’re planning a beautiful celebration in Port Douglas, a beachfront wedding in Palm Cove or something a little more intimate, here’s what I’d suggest.
How far in advance should you book your wedding photographer?
As a general guide, many couples book their wedding photographer around 9–12 months before their wedding day, particularly if they’re getting married on a popular Saturday or during peak wedding season. (April-November generally here in Far North Queensland)
Some couples book even earlier, especially if they have their hearts set on a particular photographer.
But please don’t feel like this is a deadline you absolutely have to meet!
Every wedding is different, and while booking early gives you the best chance of securing your preferred photographer, there are plenty of reasons why you might be organising things a little closer to the date.

Should I book my wedding venue or photographer first?
For most couples, choosing their wedding venue and setting a date comes before booking their photographer.
And that makes sense!
Once you know where and when you’re getting married, you can start contacting photographers to check their availability and find someone whose style and approach feels right for you.
However, if you’ve already found a photographer whose work you absolutely love, there’s nothing wrong with reaching out before you’ve locked in your venue.
You might even find that having a little flexibility with your date helps you secure both your dream venue and photographer.
And if you’re planning a destination wedding in Port Douglas or Palm Cove, your photographer may also have some helpful local knowledge about ceremony locations, lighting and the best time of day for photographs.

What if I’m getting married during peak wedding season?
Here in Tropical North Queensland, the drier months are particularly popular for weddings.
Port Douglas, Palm Cove, Cairns and the Atherton Tablelands are beautiful places to celebrate, and it’s easy to understand why couples travel from all over Australia (and beyond!) to get married here.
If you’re planning a wedding between approximately April and November, particularly on a Saturday, I’d recommend enquiring with your preferred photographer as soon as you’ve confirmed your date.
The same goes for long weekends and other popular dates.
Booking early isn’t just about securing availability, either. It gives you time to get to know your photographer, ask questions and feel comfortable knowing that an important part of your day is organised.

Can I book a wedding photographer at the last minute?
Absolutely! And please don’t let the fact that your wedding is approaching stop you from enquiring.
Maybe you’ve decided you don’t want to spend another year planning.
Maybe you’re organising a small wedding with just your closest family and friends.
Perhaps you’ve planned most of your wedding but haven’t quite found the right photographer yet.
Or maybe you’ve decided to elope in Port Douglas while you’re here on holiday.
Whatever the reason, it’s always worth asking!
While some dates book out well in advance, others may still be available just a few weeks before the wedding.
Weekday weddings, elopements and intimate celebrations can sometimes offer a little more flexibility, too.
I’d much rather you send an enquiry and find out I’m available than assume it’s too late and never ask.

Do I need to book earlier for a small wedding or elopement?
Not necessarily!
One of the lovely things about elopements and smaller weddings is that they can often be a little more flexible.
You might be planning a relaxed ceremony at Little Cove in Port Douglas, followed by lunch with your favourite people. Or perhaps you’re having a small celebration at a private property in the Tablelands.
You don’t need a huge wedding or a full day of photography to have beautiful, meaningful photographs.
I offer shorter wedding coverage as well as full-day wedding photography, so we can look at what makes sense for the celebration you’re planning.
If you’re having a weekday ceremony or only need a few hours of coverage, it’s certainly worth getting in touch, even if your date is approaching quickly.

What should I consider before choosing my wedding photographer?
While availability is important, I think there’s something even more important to consider.
Do you actually connect with their work and the way they photograph weddings?
Your wedding photographer is going to spend a significant part of one of the most meaningful days of your life with you.
So, beyond loving their photographs, I think it’s important that you feel comfortable with their approach.
Do you want someone who will gently guide you when needed but also give you space to enjoy the day?
Do you love natural moments, genuine emotion and photographs of the people who mean the most to you?
Or do you prefer a more structured approach with lots of posed portraits and carefully styled details?
There’s no right or wrong answer, but finding a photographer whose approach matches what matters to you will make such a difference to your experience.
And personally, I think your wedding photographs should be a beautiful reminder of how your day actually felt, not just how everything looked.

When should I enquire if I haven’t finalised all my wedding plans?
You don’t need to have everything figured out before getting in touch!
If you’ve chosen your date and have a rough idea of where you’re getting married, that’s usually enough to start the conversation.
You don’t need a completed wedding timeline, a final guest count or every detail organised.
We can chat about what you’re planning, how much photography coverage you might need and what matters most to you.
And if you’re still deciding between a shorter celebration and a full-day wedding, that’s absolutely fine too.

Looking for a wedding photographer in Port Douglas, Palm Cove or Cairns?
I’m Lizzy, a Port Douglas based wedding photographer, and I photograph weddings and elopements throughout Port Douglas, Palm Cove, Cairns and the Atherton Tablelands.
My approach is relaxed, natural and focused on the people and connections that make your wedding meaningful.
I love beautiful portraits, of course, but I also believe you should have plenty of time to actually enjoy your wedding day with the people you’ve invited to share it.
Whether you’re planning a wedding 18 months from now or getting married in a matter of weeks, I’d love to hear what you have in mind.
My advice? If you’ve found a photographer whose work you love, enquire sooner rather than later. But if you’ve left things a little late, please don’t be afraid to ask.
Your date might just be available!
