What Happens If It Rains on Your Wedding Day?

Wedding planning advice from a Port Douglas wedding photographer who has actually been the bride in the rain.

You’ve planned your wedding, chosen your dream location, found the perfect dress and imagined exactly how your day might unfold.

And then you check the weather forecast.

Rain. Lots of it.

If you’re planning an outdoor wedding in Port Douglas, Palm Cove, Cairns or the Atherton Tablelands, there’s a good chance you’ve wondered what happens if it rains on your wedding day.

Will the ceremony have to move? Will your photographs still be beautiful? What if it rains all day?

Well, before you start checking the weather app every fifteen minutes, I have a little story for you.

It absolutely poured on my own wedding day

And I don’t mean a few little tropical showers.

I mean it POURED.

And as the day went on, the weather just kept getting worse.

We were getting married on the beach, and our pastor very kindly offered us the church as a backup ceremony location.

But we decided to stick with the beach.

By that point, we weren’t particularly concerned about how everything looked. We just wanted to get married.

So we borrowed a gazebo from the neighbour, our guests gathered with umbrellas, and we went ahead with our beach wedding.

The rain was so heavy that water kept collecting on top of the gazebo, and we had to keep poking it throughout the ceremony to stop it filling up!

Was it the picture-perfect beach wedding we’d imagined?

Absolutely not.

But we got married, surrounded by the people we loved, and now we have a pretty funny story to tell.

And honestly, I think that’s a lovely reminder of what a wedding day is really about.

Now, as a wedding photographer, I get to bring that experience with me when couples are worried about the weather. I understand the disappointment that can come with changing plans, but I also know firsthand that a rainy wedding can still be a wonderful one.

What should you do if rain is forecast for your wedding?

First things first, don’t panic.

A forecast of rain doesn’t necessarily mean it’s going to rain throughout your entire wedding day, particularly here in tropical North Queensland.

The weather can change quickly, and sometimes a shower passes through just as quickly as it arrives.

However, rather than hoping for the best and leaving everything until the last minute, I always recommend having a wet weather plan.

Here are a few things worth considering.

1. Ask your venue about a wet weather ceremony option

If you’re planning an outdoor wedding, one of the first questions to ask your venue is what happens if it rains.

Do they have an undercover ceremony space? Can your ceremony be moved indoors? Is there somewhere your guests can comfortably gather while waiting for a shower to pass?

This is especially important for beach weddings in Port Douglas and Palm Cove, garden weddings around Cairns, and outdoor weddings on the Atherton Tablelands.

Even if you’re dreaming of a ceremony beneath the palm trees or overlooking the mountains, knowing there’s an alternative can take a lot of pressure off.

And if your ceremony is somewhere without an established wet weather option, have a conversation with your celebrant and other suppliers well before the day.

2. Be flexible with your wedding timeline

Sometimes the difference between getting your outdoor photographs and missing them altogether is simply being willing to adjust the timing.

If rain is expected around your scheduled portrait time, we may be able to take advantage of a break in the weather earlier or later in the day.

Perhaps we photograph your family immediately after the ceremony, or leave your couple portraits until the rain has passed.

This is one of the reasons I love creating a relaxed wedding timeline rather than scheduling every moment down to the minute.

A little breathing room gives us the opportunity to work around unexpected things, including tropical weather.

Of course, we’ll always work within the time you’ve booked and what is practical for your day.

3. Have a few umbrellas ready

Clear umbrellas or simple neutral umbrellas can be incredibly useful for a rainy wedding.

Not only can they help keep you dry while moving between locations, but they can also look lovely in photographs.

If you’re getting married outdoors, consider having enough umbrellas for your wedding party and guests, especially if there is a walk between the ceremony and reception.

And remember, umbrellas are helpful for showers, but heavy rain, lightning or strong winds may mean moving to proper shelter is the safer option.

4. Don’t worry if we can’t take photographs in your original location

Perhaps you imagined your wedding portraits on Four Mile Beach in Port Douglas, beneath the palm trees at Palm Cove, or surrounded by the beautiful green landscapes of the Atherton Tablelands.

If the weather doesn’t cooperate, we can look for an alternative.

A covered verandah, beautiful doorway, sheltered garden or even a thoughtfully chosen indoor space can make a lovely setting for photographs.

And sometimes, the simplest backgrounds allow the connection between you to become the focus of the image.

You don’t need a spectacular sunset or a perfectly clear sky to have meaningful wedding photographs.

You just need the two of you.

5. Remember that cloudy skies can be beautiful for photographs

One thing couples often don’t realise is that bright sunshine isn’t necessarily the easiest light to photograph in.

Overcast skies can create lovely, soft, even light, particularly for portraits.

There are fewer harsh shadows, less squinting, and often more flexibility when choosing where to photograph.

Of course, there’s a difference between a beautifully overcast afternoon and a tropical downpour!

But don’t assume that a cloudy forecast means your wedding photographs won’t be beautiful.

What if it rains all day at your Port Douglas, Cairns or Atherton Tablelands wedding?

Sometimes the rain doesn’t pass.

And that’s when it’s worth remembering that your wedding isn’t just about the outdoor ceremony or the portraits you had planned.

It’s about the people, the moments and the experience of getting married.

Your mum helping you into your dress.

Your dad seeing you ready for the first time.

Your partner’s reaction when they see you.

Your grandparents holding hands during the ceremony.

Your friends laughing together at the reception.

None of these moments require sunshine.

In fact, these are often the photographs that become more meaningful as the years go by.

As a wedding photographer, my priority is to document the story of your day as it actually unfolds, rather than making your entire wedding revolve around photographs.

And if the weather means we need to change our plans, we’ll work with what we have.

Is it more likely to rain during a tropical North Queensland wedding?

If you’re planning a destination wedding in Port Douglas, Palm Cove or Cairns, it’s worth understanding our tropical seasons.

Generally, our wet season runs from around November through April, while the drier months are usually April/May through October.

That doesn’t mean it rains every day during the wet season, or that you’re guaranteed sunshine during the dry season.

It simply means that the time of year is something to consider when choosing your wedding date, venue and ceremony location.

The Atherton Tablelands also have their own weather patterns, with conditions varying between locations and elevations. A wedding in the rainforest around Yungaburra can feel quite different from a coastal wedding in Port Douglas.

Whatever time of year you’re getting married, I’d recommend choosing a venue you love for both its outdoor and wet weather possibilities.

That way, if the weather changes, you’re not suddenly getting married somewhere you’ve never imagined.

Will rain ruin my wedding photographs?

Absolutely not.

Will it sometimes change the photographs we create? Of course.

We might not get the exact beach sunset you had imagined, or we may need to choose a different location for your family photographs.

But beautiful wedding photography isn’t dependent on perfect weather.

It’s about light, emotion, connection and telling the story of your day.

A good wet weather plan, a little flexibility and a photographer who is comfortable adapting to different conditions can make all the difference.

And sometimes, the unexpected moments become the ones you remember most.

I certainly never imagined I’d be standing beneath a borrowed gazebo on my wedding day, listening to the rain while someone poked the roof to stop it filling with water.

But here we are, years later, and it’s still one of my favourite stories to tell.

Planning a wedding in Port Douglas, Palm Cove, Cairns or the Atherton Tablelands?

I’m Lizzy, a Port Douglas based wedding photographer, photographing relaxed weddings and elopements throughout tropical North Queensland.

I believe your wedding day should be about spending time with the people you love, rather than worrying about whether everything looks perfect.

Whether you’re planning a beachfront ceremony, an intimate elopement or a larger celebration surrounded by family and friends, I’d love to document your day as it naturally unfolds.

Rain, sunshine and everything in between.

And if you’re currently checking the forecast and wondering whether your wedding will be okay if it rains?

Take it from someone who has been there.

It can still be a pretty wonderful day.
