Why Have A Weekday Elopement in Cairns or Port Douglas?

If you’re planning an elopement in Cairns or Port Douglas, there’s really no rule that says you need to get married on a Saturday.

In fact, one of the lovely things about choosing an elopement is that you get to leave a lot of the traditional wedding rules behind — including the idea that weddings need to happen on a weekend.

A Tuesday afternoon at Little Cove followed by dinner at your favourite restaurant? Absolutely.

A Thursday ceremony in Palm Cove followed by cocktails and a long dinner overlooking the beach? Perfect.

If you’re travelling to Tropical North Queensland for your wedding, choosing a weekday can make your elopement feel even more relaxed.

1. Popular locations can be quieter during the week

Cairns and Port Douglas are popular holiday destinations, which means our beaches, restaurants and beautiful public spaces can become busy — particularly on weekends.

Choosing a weekday won’t guarantee you’ll have a location completely to yourselves, but it can give you a better chance of finding things a little quieter.

For an intimate elopement, that can be particularly lovely.

Instead of feeling like you’re having your ceremony in front of an audience, you can focus on each other and actually enjoy the experience.

This is especially worth considering for popular Port Douglas elopement locations such as Little Cove and Rex Smeal Park.

2. You may have more choice when it comes to your wedding vendors

One of the biggest advantages of choosing a weekday elopement is simply having more options.

Photographers, celebrants, hair and makeup artists, florists and wedding venues can book well in advance for Saturdays during the popular wedding season.

If you’re flexible enough to choose a Monday–Thursday instead, you may have a much better chance of assembling the team of suppliers you actually want.

This can be particularly helpful if you’re planning your Cairns or Port Douglas elopement with less notice than you would a traditional wedding.

3. Some elopement packages are actually designed for weekdays

Weekday elopements aren’t unusual in Port Douglas.

In fact, some local elopement companies specifically offer their smaller elopement packages Monday–Thursday.

It makes sense when you think about it. An elopement doesn’t need to work around the traditional Saturday wedding schedule.

You can choose the day that works best for the two of you.

4. Your elopement can become part of your holiday

This is probably one of my favourite reasons to elope in Tropical North Queensland.

You don’t have to fly into Cairns, get married and fly home.

Make a holiday of it.

You could arrive over the weekend, spend a couple of days settling in, get married on a Tuesday or Wednesday and then spend the rest of the week enjoying Port Douglas, Palm Cove, the Great Barrier Reef and the rainforest.

Your wedding becomes one beautiful part of a much bigger experience together.

And if you’re inviting a handful of your favourite people, they can do exactly the same thing.

Rather than everyone travelling for one hectic Saturday, you’re essentially inviting them on holiday with you — with a wedding somewhere in the middle.

5. There can be more flexibility around your ceremony time

When you’re planning an outdoor elopement in Cairns or Port Douglas, light matters more to your photographs than whether your ceremony happens at 3pm on a Saturday.

Having some flexibility around your date can make it easier to plan the ceremony around the experience you actually want.

Perhaps that’s a late-afternoon ceremony followed by portraits as the light becomes softer.

Or perhaps you’d rather have an intimate morning ceremony and spend the rest of your wedding day swimming, eating and celebrating.

Your elopement doesn’t have to follow a traditional wedding timeline.

6. It may give you more options for your post-elopement celebration

One of my favourite things about photographing intimate weddings is seeing couples make the day completely their own.

You might finish your ceremony and head somewhere beautiful for dinner.

You might book a private dining experience.

You might have champagne and cake with six of your closest people.

Or you might change out of your wedding clothes and go straight back to the pool at your resort.

Choosing a weekday can sometimes give you more flexibility when you’re organising restaurants, accommodation and other experiences around your elopement — particularly when you’re planning everything with relatively short notice.

7. A weekday wedding can simply feel more relaxed

There is something wonderfully freeing about getting married on an ordinary Wednesday.

The world is going about its normal business while you’re standing underneath the palm trees saying your vows.

And that’s really what I love about elopements.

They give you permission to strip away everything you think a wedding should look like and concentrate on what actually matters to you.

If that means getting married barefoot on a beach in Palm Cove on a Tuesday afternoon, then heading somewhere incredible for dinner afterwards, that’s a pretty wonderful way to spend a Tuesday.

I photograph relaxed, intimate elopements throughout Cairns, Palm Cove and Port Douglas, with a focus on the people, connection and experience rather than turning your wedding day into one long photoshoot.
