But some of the most meaningful and natural moments can be captured right at home. Recently, I had the privilege of photographing a beautiful Cairns family in their own space. A pregnant mum, her husband, and their little girl.
This session was everything I love about maternity photos at home: relaxed, playful, and filled with genuine connection.

For this Cairns family, their home was the perfect backdrop. It told their story in a way no other location could. Every corner held a little piece of their life together, making the photos even more personal and special. This particular family had just moved into their home and wanted to capture not only their pregnancy, but also moments in their new space together.
A Playful Family Session
From the start, it was clear that this family had a “family first” attitude. They were warm, welcoming, and happiest in each other’s company. Their little toddler instantly lit up the room with giggles and energy. Chatting away and eager to dress up as Cinderella.
We began the session with a little play and some pregnancy photos of Mum by herself, then some fun on the bed. Tickles, cuddles, and lots of laughter. These in-between moments, where parents laugh together and children squeal with joy, are the ones that feel the most alive in photographs.
Next, their little girl proudly showed off the toy kitchen, cooking while mum and dad joined in. She especially loved to provide Japanese food, as is her heritage. It was the sweetest glimpse into everyday family life and a reminder that maternity photography isn’t just about celebrating the bump, it’s about capturing the stage your whole family is in right now.
Towards the end of the session, we finished with story time. Snuggled up together, they read a favourite book, a perfect way to end the shoot on a calm and tender note. Especially as this is something their family loved to do together.
