If you’ve ever thought, “I’d love Christmas photos, but my toddler will never sit still,” you’re certainly not alone.
In fact, it’s one of the most common concerns I hear from parents before booking a Christmas mini session.
The good news? Your child doesn’t need to sit perfectly still, smile at the camera or follow instructions for us to create beautiful photographs.
As a family photographer, I expect children to behave like… well, children! That’s all part of the fun.
Your Child Doesn’t Need to Be “Perfect”
Some children arrive bursting with excitement. Others take a little while to warm up. Some are shy, some are energetic, and some would rather explore every corner of the set than look anywhere near the camera.
Every one of those personalities is welcome.
I never expect children to perform or force smiles. Instead, I photograph the little moments that happen naturally as your family spends time together.
Often, those are the photographs that mean the most years later.

I Follow Your Child’s Lead
Rather than asking children to sit still for the entire session, I keep things relaxed and playful.
We might:
- Play little games
- Look for Christmas decorations together
- Share cuddles with Mum and Dad
- Chat and laugh
- Let your child explore for a moment before gently bringing them back
Children are far more likely to engage when they’re enjoying themselves rather than feeling pressured.

The Best Photos Usually Aren’t Looking at the Camera
While we’ll always try for a few traditional family portraits, some of my favourite Christmas images happen in between.
Tiny hands reaching for Mum.
A giggle after Dad tells a silly joke.
A cuddle when little legs get tired.
A curious look at the Christmas decorations.
These are the moments that tell your family’s story far better than a perfectly posed smile ever could.

Please Don’t Apologise
One thing I’d love every parent to know is this:
You never need to apologise for your child.
Toddlers have big feelings. Babies get tired. Preschoolers become shy around new people. It’s all completely normal.
I’ve photographed hundreds of families, and I’ve learned that every child settles in their own way.
There is no such thing as a “difficult” child—just children with wonderfully different personalities.

We’ll Work Together
Sometimes your child might need a cuddle.
Sometimes they might need a snack or a quick break.
Sometimes they simply need Mum or Dad to join in and have fun too.
There’s no rush. We’ll adapt the session to suit your family rather than expecting your family to fit into a rigid plan.

The Goal Isn’t Perfection
When you look back at your Christmas photos years from now, I don’t want you to remember how perfectly everyone smiled.
I want you to remember how your little one reached for your hand.
How they buried their face in your shoulder.
How they laughed when you tickled them.
How they looked at you with complete trust.
Those are the moments that become your family’s memories.
Thinking About Booking Christmas Mini Sessions?
If you’ve been putting off family photos because you’re worried your child won’t cooperate, I hope this gives you some reassurance.
My sessions are designed to be relaxed, child-led and full of genuine connection.
Your children don’t need to be perfect.
They simply need to be themselves.
And that’s exactly who I want to photograph.
