One of the most common things I hear from Mums, is that their partner never takes any natural photos of them with their children. They may take the odd photo or two, but it’s usually after the Mum has begged and pleaded for them to take a photo, and inevitably it ends up being a quick “cheese”, someones head is likely cut off or it’s out of focus and the angle is so terrible, the Mum just ends up disappointed.

The more women have expressed their sadness at not being in any of the family photos, as they are generally the photographer, the more I have seen a need to provide help with that!

Selfies always end up staged, or with the Mums arm arm taking up 80% of the photo!

From what people tell me, they just want some regularly taken photos of themselves playing with their children, or bathing them or cuddling them when they’ve fallen asleep.

So what do you do when noone is taking these types of photos for you? You do it yourself!

I know it isn’t the most ‘ideal’ situation, but there is a way you can take selfies with your children, while still being able to relax and enjoy the moment, rather than push a button and run into the spot with a 10 second timer and end up with one photo which you hate!

A self timer app for your phone!

Now, I know all phone cameras these days come with an in built self timer to the camera app. However, it is a generic, click button, set it to 3 seconds or 10 seconds and it takes one shot.

We all know how much children move, make silly faces, become uninterested or distracted by cameras.

Being a professional photographer, I will admit I use my camera for most, if not all of my self portraits with my family. The quality is better, I love having them a part of my yearbook which I only include camera photo in, and I do spend time editing my camera photos, whereas phone photos for me are just quick snap shots.

However, I do have lots of clients, friends and followers who prefer to use their phones.

Within my free Facebook Community Memories of Mum, Mums have been sharing their own self portraits they’ve taken. Both on their camera and their phones using a self timer and a tripod (Or balancing strategically on the table against a water bottle!)

One of my beautiful community members shared her favourite self timer app, which was great for me, especially since I don’t generally use my phone.

After her recommendation, I went away and did some research on it to see what I thought, and if other people could benefit from it.

It was great! It gives users similar control over their camera self timer settings that I would use with my camera.

The self timer app is ‘Lens Buddy”.

It allows you to change settings such as the time delay before the initial photo is taken, how many photos you want it to take before it stops, the time between each photo and more!

This means, if you want to just play with your children and forget about the phone taking photos, you can!

Of course, it means you could have 100s of photos take aren’t keepers that you will have to go through and delete, but better that than no photo at all, right?

Unfortunately, this app is only available for Apple, so if you are on Android, hang tight because I am currently researching a similar app for Android.

If you give this app a try, I’d love to see your results! I’d also love to welcome you to my Facebook community. You can join here to inspire and be inspired, and learn more for FREE 🙂
