We kicked off this years Mother’s Day beach sessions with probably the most perfect Cairns sunset! After lots of rain that week, it always worries me how mini session day will go, but we couldn’t have asked for a better afternoon.

This beautiful beach maternity session here in Cairns was the perfect mix of natural, timeless portraits and the kind of playful moments that truly reflect family life.
We started the session slowly, focusing on those classic, connected images. The kind you’ll frame on your walls for years to come. Mum with her girls, all together as a family, and those quiet in-between moments that show just how much love there is before baby arrives.
One of the things I always guide my families through is starting with those more relaxed, “everyone together” images first. It allows everyone to settle in, feel comfortable, and ease into the session naturally, especially important when little ones are involved. I always call these the Grandma shots! The ones where everyone is looking, and they ALWAYS end up on the wall.
Once we had captured those timeless portraits, the session shifted into something a little more playful.
The girls ran along the shoreline, splashed in the ocean, and just enjoyed being kids. These are often the moments families don’t realise they’ll treasure the most, the laughter, the movement, the connection. It’s where personalities really shine.
For maternity sessions like this, I always encourage a mix of both. You get the best of both worlds: beautiful, calm images and the real, joy-filled moments that tell your family’s story.
