If you’ve found yourself on this blog post, then you’ve likely Googled something along the lines of ‘newborn photographer Cairns’, ‘how to choose a newborn photographer’ or ‘best newborn photographer in Cairns’.
Perhaps you are in the early stages of pregnancy and like to be organised, or maybe you’ve just given birth and suddenly feel the urge to book a professional newborn photographer in Cairns to capture those early days with your new baby.
Either way, here you are, so welcome! I’m really glad to have you here.
I bet when you typed in ‘newborn photographer Cairns’, you were just overwhelmed by pages and pages of newborn photographers, ready to capture your new little baby. So, how do you choose?
I thought I would write out a little post that might help you decide which Cairns photographer would be best suited to you and your family.
How to choose your newborn photographer
So how should you make your decision? With social media being so popular these days, it’s a great way to have a quick overview of someones portfolio. If they are fairly active on their page, you may even be able to ‘meet’ them via their social media platform of choice!
I love Instagram, and show up there often. I think it’s a really lovely way to interact with the families who choose to hire me to photograph their newborn baby. I’ve had lots of Mummy’s say it made me feel more like a friend, so when it came to their session, they felt relaxed and comfortable around me.
If you’re on Instagram, I’d love for you to come by and say hi! You can follow me here.

Do they have good reviews?
The first thing we do when booking anything, is ask the advice of people we trust. Have your friends used that particular photographer? Have they got multiple reviews on Google and Facebook that you can view? (If you can see that they have been written by others, you know they are authentic)
When you read the reviews, do the families mention the types of things you are looking for? Someone might say ‘The photographer made us feel so calm when they held our new baby’. Something specific like this might be really important to you when booking a newborn photographer, because they are likely going to be one of the first strangers to hold your baby other than Doctors and Midwives.
Don’t just look for reviews that say ‘The photos were amazing’, because while that is important, I believe the most important thing is how the person made someone feel during one of the most vulnerable times of their life.
Choosing someone who specialises in that genre
Does the photographer specialise? I think this is another obvious one, but when I decided to specialise as a maternity and newborn photographer, it enabled me to really become an expert at what I photograph. That way, the families I photograph can be assured that the money they invest is going to get them the best product possible.
What is their background with babies and children?
This doesn’t just mean, do they have their own children. Getting newborn photos taken is no easy task in all honesty, especially when there are siblings involved.
As someone who has worked with children from lots of different backgrounds in many challenging environments, I know all about how being in new places or around new people can affect behaviours. Add in a camera and potentially stressed parents who desperately want beautiful photos and things can get a little chaotic.
Having a background working with children can be a real additional advantage when it comes to a successful family photoshoot.
I hope this post has helped you in choosing the right newborn photographer for you. If you would like more information, I would love to chat with you. You can contact me via my form here, or directly at lizzy@lizzyhannaford.com.au.

Hi.
Just wondering what the current policy is for newborn photos, during covid restrictions?
I’m due to give birth 24/06.
Looking forward to your reply.
