The importance of backing up your photos

backing up your photos

I talk all the time about printing your photos, but what about the importance of backing up your photos?

If you follow me on Instagram, you’ll see my regular posts about organising the photos on your phone.

A couple of years ago I was just like you. Bogged down with thousands of photos on my phone, never able to find the important ones. And don’t even talk to me about printing! It just didn’t even happen! (And how could it, when I was scrambling to find photos of my loved ones in amongst pictures of avocado on toast!)

I decided enough was enough. It was time to organise the photos and start printing the ones I loved, so that my whole family could enjoy them.

I decided the easiest way to organise my photos, was to transfer everything I currently had on my phone and start from scratch.

Now, I regularly delete unwanted images. Screenshots that have served their purpose, photos that automatically save from apps such as WhatsApp and messenger and those good old avocado toast photos! (If you need regular reminders, follow my Instagram stories, as I share tips and content to motivate you weekly!)

But this post isn’t about organising your photos. This particular one is about the importance of backing up your photos.

So why is it important to back up your photos?

My first reason is that phones fail. It has happened to me, and I see it regularly. Not only do they fail, they also get lost or stolen more times than I care to think about! Within a blink of an eye, all your photos and videos, all of your memories could be gone!

The second reason is that, hard drives also fail! Technology moves on so quickly things can’t keep up, and we carry hard drives with us everywhere. They’re bound to get worn out.

My top tip for backing up your photos, is to back up your backup! Transfer your photos onto your computer if you have space (if not, back up to a first hard drive), then back up to a second hard drive.

If you really want to be safe, use a cloud back up also. I back up two two hard drives (completely the same data on both hard drives) then onto a cloud based system also.

I really believe you can’t be too careful with preserving your memories.
