Newborn photoshoot FAQs
Today I wanted to answer the newborn photoshoot FAQs I get, to help set your mind at ease and know what to expect. When it comes to booking a newborn photographer, there can be many things on your mind. If you have any other questions regarding your newborn photoshoot, you can contact me at any time or leave them in the comments below.
At what point in my pregnancy should I book in?
To give time to prepare properly for your newborn photoshoot and ensure my availability, I advise to book in with me after your 20 week scan.
When do you schedule your newborn photoshoots?
When booked in advance, I schedule my newborn photoshoots for around a week after baby’s due date. If baby is already here, I book at my first availability
What if my baby comes late?
If you reach your due date and your baby hasn’t arrived, just send me a message and we will reschedule as appropriate
How old is baby during their newborn photos?
I generally photograph newborns after 5 days old. This gives time for your milk to come in if you choose to breastfeed and to have started settling in at home
Do you photograph older babies?
Yes. Newborns change so quickly so ideally, the younger the better for those special newborn qualities, but if you’ve missed out, any time is fine.
What if I want to cuddle my baby during my shoot?
There is plenty of time for cuddling. In fact, the majority of the session is spent cuddling and spending time with your baby
What if my baby won’t settle?
There is plenty of time for feeding baby. Everything I do is baby led so we do what is needed for baby to be happy and settled. Whether that’s feed, wrapping in a blanket, cuddling a particular parent. I have worked with newborns (and have three of my own children) for many years and can usually figure out what the problem is. If baby can’t settle due to illness, colic or something else, I offer to reschedule. Having everyone as relaxed as possible is important so that you can look back on your photos with fondness.
How do you approach c-sections?
I always have a chat with you regardless of how you birthed about how you’re feeling and this communication continues throughout the photoshoot in case anything changes, as it might post partum. I minimise movement, how long you might be stood, whether you are comfortable holding baby for periods of time. If there are older siblings, I remind them and try to involve Dad as much as possible with assisting them. We adjust everything according to yours and your families needs.
I live in a rental or I’m worried about my homes aesthetic
Although my newborn photoshoots currently take place in your home rather than a studio, the emphasis is not on your home (unless you want it to be). My approach is on the connection between yourselves and your new baby. Whether that be using a plain wall in your home, in the master bedroom, or on the couch. I find the least distracting area where everyone can get comfortable and the focus is on the cuddles and love you have for your new family member.
I’m worried about the available light in my home
I get you to send me photos of areas in your home well before your photoshoot. While I try to use natural light where possible, I do have artificial lights I can bring if needed.
What should I wear to my newborn photoshoot ?
I advise to keep patterns to a minimum and choose a soft neutral palette where possible. Newborns are so tiny with such lovely features, you want to keep distractions to a minimum. This can still be done within your personal style. A dress, a blouse and pants. I also suggest keeping make up as natural as possible. Think effortless and classic.
We feel awkward in front of the camera
No one knows how to act in front of the camera. That’s my job. I use my expertise to ensure you feel relaxed and confident to be yourselves so that your newborn photos are natural, flattering and feel like you.
