If you are looking at booking a newborn photoshoot and want to know how to choose in home vs studio newborn photoshoot, this post is for you
Which one is better, in-home or studio photography for a newborn?
The main difference between in-home newborn photography and studio newborn photography is that in-home produces more relaxed and natural newborn photos, while studio gives a more curated, posed look.
Here is a quick overview of the main differences between in-home newborn photography and studio newborn photography
In-home | Studio |
Relaxed & Natural | Posed |
Familiar Space | Unfamiliar Space |
Siblings feel relaxed | Siblings feel overwhelmed |
No travel time – can feed when I arrive | Time spent travelling – baby need to stop & feed |
Personalised – to your style, taste and personalities | Cookie cutter – your photos will look the same as everyone else’s |
Playful | Styled |
So let me expand on each of these points to help you gain a helpful understanding of which is the right type of newborn photography for you – in-home newborn or studio newborn
Relaxed and natural
In-home newborn photography (also known as lifestyle newborn photography) is relaxed and natural. Unlike studio newborn photography which is much more heavily posed, in-home newborn photography is directed but not posed. You aren’t left not knowing what to do, but the direction allows for natural moments to happen with your sweet new baby.
Familiar space
In your own home you are safe to be yourselves whereas studio photography is an unfamiliar space and therefore you may spend the majority of your photoshoot trying to feel comfortable and your photos may feel more stiff, and less like you.
Siblings feel relaxed
Children also relax and warm up quicker in their familiar safe space. They know that the photographer is a trusted person as they are being invited in to the family home. Things like reading their personal books or showing the photographer their bedroom can build an instant rapport and will result in those natural smiles you love.
No travel time
Newborns are unpredictable. They aren’t on a schedule yet and may require feeding when you least expect it. With in-home newborn photography, the photographer travels to you so you can relax and feed your baby when he or she needs. When travelling to a studio, you may need to stop to feed baby and feel anxious that you will arrive later than expected. Not a great recipe for relaxed newborn photos.
Personalised
No family is the same. Your in-home newborn photoshoot is tailored to you and your family’s personalities. If your home is styled, this will be included in your session. If not, the connection you bring as a family is the focus. Studio photography is much more cookie cutter. A set of poses in a workflow and your newborn photoshoot could look like everyone else’s. It is also much easier to include a well loved family pet in an in-home newborn photoshoot.
Playful
In your family home, there is much more space to play. Both during your newborn photoshoot and the in between moments to settle a sibling. These playful moments are something wonderful to look back on. In a studio, you are likely to be limited to one room which can make parents and any siblings feel uncomfortable.
