Having been a newborn photographer since 2017 and a mother of 3, I have seen and experienced my fair share of situations in the early days of bringing home a baby.
There are so many emotions, both positive and hard, that can shape how the early days at home can feel.
When I decided to take a more casual approach to newborn photography, my main reason was that posing babies didn’t really make sense to me. Don’t get me wrong, it can be beautiful. But it’s also time consuming, (when parents want time efficiency to get album worthy photos without all the fluff), babies generally don’t like being put down and for me and mine and my clients’ favourite photos are the real ones.
Tiny babes being flopped over shoulders with mouths wide open catching flies, excitable siblings sat proudly on the bed surrounded by cushions for support, feeding your baby while your partner proudly looks on and the race to catch a surprise little smile.
Photos that feel like you, and feel like a lovely Saturday morning at home with your family.
You don’t even need to dress up if you don’t want to. My clients are very relaxed – some like to wear a dress because they do so on a regular basis, some like to wear jeans and a top or relaxed linen shirt.
The beauty about casual newborn photos is they aren’t cookie cutter. You will look back at them and see exactly who your family was at that time. Better still, your children will see exactly who you all were. Not just a product of a pose or a random prop.
