Over the years of being not only a newborn photographer in Cairns, but also a Mother to three children, I can think of so many benefits of an in-home newborn photoshoot.
Having a baby is different for everyone and no matter how much you plan, things may be different upon arrival.
You may feel really confident going in to being a parent, then feel quite anxious once baby is here, or it may be the opposite. There are so many variables when it comes to giving birth and leaving the house within the first week may not be an option for you.
This is one reason why in home midwife visits have become so popular. You can snuggle up with your new baby at home, not worry about any germs you might be exposing them to and relax.
I had someone mention to me recently that they were worried their home wasn’t suitable for an in-home newborn photoshoot because it was a rental. It is also very common for people to mention that their home is not ‘Instagram worthy’.
This particular person was reassured when she saw a recent newborn photoshoot with me and realised that the focus of my sessions is more on the family and their connection, than the home itself. (You can see that session here)
While certain elements of your home are going to show up, you could have toys and yesterdays dirty dishes laying around and no one would know.
Here is a list of just some of the benefits of an in-home newborn photoshoot
- No need to pack a bag and worry about forgetting anything, it’s all at your home ready to go
- You will likely experience post partum bleeding for the first couple of weeks after birth and feel more comfortable in your own home
- If you have had a traumatic birth or caesarean, you may be in pain
- Your home may actually be a really special place for you and you want to remember those precious early days at home with your new baby
- Siblings are often more comfortable in their own environment and more likely to be themselves. I find little ones place trust in me quicker because I have been invited in to their space. You will also find you relax into your photoshoot quicker too because you aren’t in a new place at what can be a vulnerable time
- Families love to include their furry friends. While a dog can be brought to a location or studio, maybe you have a cat, bird or other pet you’d like to include
- Newborns can feed for long periods to develop a milk supply. Feeding times and lengths vary and being in your own space can help you relax, we don’t have to worry about light if out on location (or other elements involved in location shoots). I use this time to capture feeding photos if you would like, or just chat with you.
- If you are bottle feeding your newborn, you have all your supplies and the ability to warm a bottle with you
- If you have multiple children, it can be nerve wracking wondering how they will behave in a new place. If siblings need a break, they can enjoy a snack, play with their toys or they love showing me their bedrooms or reading a book with me. It may seem strange for me to sit and read a book with your children during your photoshoot, but that 5 minutes giving them special time without my camera can help build a bond that will make them feel comfortable and more willing to continue and really get those natural smiles
- Not every family love in the home they brought their baby home to forever. In my experience, children love to look back at where they grew up. It gives them a sense of belonging and helps develop an understanding of who they are and where they came from
This is just some of the benefits of an in-home newborn photoshoot. I hope it gives you an understanding of why I love in-home newborn photoshoots so much, and that it isn’t necessarily about how your home looks, but the connection made within your home.
