There are many ways to have your pregnancy photographed. One of my favourite types of pregnancy photoshoot is a simple elegant maternity photoshoot.
“Simplicity is the keynote of all elegance” – Coco Chanel
I really love photos to be timeless, but also the focus to be on what is intended. In this case, the pregnant mother. Removing all distractions, choosing simple timeless clothing and naturally posing in a way that feels effortless and natural.
Pregnancy can bring with it some insecurities and feeling uncomfortable. I generally recommend pregnancy photos to be taken around 28-34 weeks. By this point your tummy is prominent enough to be obvious that it’s a pregnancy, but you aren’t at the final stages of feeling really uncomfortable, tired (again) and carrying water retention.
This simple look can be achieved using a plain light coloured wall or a paper backdrop, and can be used with natural light where available, or using artificial light to create a natural look.
With any type of maternity where some skin is showing, the way I start the photoshoot is in accordance to how confident someone is. For someone who knows they’d like to show a bit of skin but may not be so confident, I might start with a more traditional maternity photo with a dress on then move to unbuttoned jeans and a shirt and so on. Some women also like to have both so they have something lovely to share with the grandparents.
