The advantage of an in home family session is that if it rains, which it often does in the tropics, you don’t have to postpone!
As Seph and I emailed about her upcoming session, she mentioned that they’d love to have some of their family photos on their couch, but that the sun was really harsh in that area in the morning. We changed to the afternoon, and after I mentioned ice cream, we decided that would be a great plan to keep little ones going at, quite honestly, the worst time of day for children 😆
As it happened, the change to the afternoon was a good idea for a number of reasons. It actually poured with rain in the morning, and we were hoping to do some of the session outside in the garden, and, in the afternoon we were blessed with a rainbow! (Yes, I did a happy dance!)
Seph said she wasn’t really sure what to expect from an in home family session as she’d never done one before. I explained to her it was a mix of more prompted and traditional family photos mixed in with things that are meaningful to their family.
To get her boys warmed up to me, we started with toy airplane throwing and jumping on the bed! What better way to get everyone relaxed, having fun and feeling like I’m not even there.
With the weather still unpredictable, and the ground damp from the rain in the morning, I decided we would start with photos on the couch just in case the boys got muddy.
Part of me wanted to get outside done while the rain had stopped, just in case, but we all know how much fun children have with mud!! I wasn’t going to risk it.
The rain held off though, and with the odd bit of drizzle their family played in their garden before tucking into ice cream.
Completely unprompted by me, eating ice cream quickly became getting covered in it! Food fights! So much fun and what amazing moments for the boys to look back on when they’re older. If there’s one thing I want my own children to remember, it’s that we had fun together. You’ll see in their photos that they definitely do that.
The next thing we know, Seph is pushing Dimitri in the pool fully clothed and in jump the boys! Seph stayed out, and I don’t blame her. It is winter here in Cairns after all 😉
I really loved this in home family session. Such a lovely combo of family photos prompted by me and documenting moments as they unfolded because of their own personalities.

I hope you enjoy looking at their family photos as much as I did creating them.
Here are my favourites.
