Today I want to share with you a First Birthday cake smash!
As a Family photographer, one of the most common questions I receive is whether I photograph first birthday cake smash.
Well, as a photographer that loves to capture family connection and emotion, I always struggled with the concept of elaborate setups with cake smashes. Don’t get me wrong, they can be beautiful, but I really love to have the main focus be on the milestone of the baby turning one. Their little personality.
I found big set ups can become more about the actual set up than the actual baby being photographed.
So I started my very minimal cake smash sessions.
They begin with a portrait session of the family (or just the baby, and any siblings), followed by time with the actual cake, then a little splash in the baby tub at the end.
As with all my sessions, my cake smashes are always baby led. Some babies just don’t like to smash their cake.
Some get their face right in there, others honestly just prefer to use a spoon.
Quite often, this is the first time a baby has even had anything sweet. So to be offered a huge cake can be fairly overwhelming for them. (Even I would feel overwhelmed at being given a whole cake and told to eat it!)
This session we involved the whole family in the cake smashing fun! As you will see from the photos of this first birthday cake smash, even Mum and Dad let their hair down and got covered in cake!
